Blacken the Sky

MindOverFour This is no funereal doom filled with songs of anguish. It is doom rooted in hard rock, with gargantuan riffs and soaring, ballsy vocals. There are moments of pure Dio-ness here that raise it above much of the doom genre. The art work, band name, and album title make it seem like it will be a wrist-slitting affair, but instead it is elevating. Favorite track: Below the Seas.

Colin M. It is a damn shame they have apparently called it quits because this is an absolute monster of an album. Top notch doom with amazing, powerful vocals. Favorite track: 17 Days.
mAnarchist
mAnarchist thumbnail
mAnarchist A truly great doom metal record. The only negative is the sound quality; the hyper-compressed mastering job, Compare to their previous EP which sounded gloriously dynamic. Favorite track: 17 Days.

FDJ (Desert Psychlist) Huge lo-fi doom/occult grooves fronted by titanic female vocals. Favorite track: Death March.

No Roam 08:11
Been wandering for days Hoping for a way To pass safely Beyond these borders lies A better future for me No roam No home No place to call my own I’m the last of my kind Seeking desperately To start over In peace The horror I have fled Can’t be any worse Where I’m headed No roam No home No place to call my own No roam No home No place to call my own

17 Days 06:12
Cracks appear The structure gives way Collapsing all around Falling at my feet The air quickly heats Getting harder to breath For 17 days I contemplate Minutes turn to hours turn to days I lie in wait Darkness descends I am alone I fear I’ll never be found Resources grow scarce Daylight alludes me I’m loosing the will to live For 17 days I contemplate Minutes turn to hours turn to days I lie in wait Recovering the dead The numbers grow higher Power, money, greed Creating empires at the expense of the weak Influence their technique Untouchable by the weak For 17 days I contemplate Minutes turn to hours turn to days I lie in wait

We call the ocean home We dive to the depths below Scouring the seas Angel of hatred Revenge sought and won Now lost for eternity We dive, we dive, we dive – dive – dive – dive – dive We dive to the depths below Metal-clad like scales The Nautilus takes control We dive to the depths below Metal-clad like scales The Nautilus takes control Wandering the seas No obstacle opposed The greatest sea monster breathes Traversing tunnels In the red sea Just a compass to guide us We dive, we dive, we dive – dive – dive – dive – dive We dive to the depths below Metal-clad like scales The Nautilus takes control We dive to the depths below Metal-clad like scales The Nautilus takes control Accelerating speed There is no slowing now As the needle makes its mark Ripping through its pray Sending it to a watery grave Final revenge has its way We dive, we dive

It’s the thing that keeps you awake Clinging to your fears Uncontrollable nightmares It’s leaving you in tears And are you afraid Of the dark Things that crawl Behind the stone wall Staring at you through the window It calls your name Trapped for all eternity Your soul it wants for company And are you afraid Of the dark Things that crawl Behind the stone wall Blood it runs down the walls Pooling on the floor Staining your feet Soaking the boards And are you afraid Of the dark Things that crawl Behind the stone wall

Bloodletting 05:45
It’s the cure For what ails you Bleed ‘til you’re weak Unclean, impure Just make the marks obscure Bloodletting Bloodletting Bloodletting Blood Puncture the wound Slice the vein Feel the warmth Flowing down Sometimes I don’t want to feel Just keep cutting ‘til it’s no longer real Dizzy, weak Relief from what I seek Bloodletting Bloodletting Bloodletting Blood Puncture the wound Slice the vein Feel the warmth Flowing down Bloodletting Bloodletting Bloodletting Blood Puncture the wound Slice the vein Feel the warmth Flowing down Bloodletting Bloodletting Bloodletting Blood

Death March 11:09
Willingly led by the blind A human sacrifice Will bring peace to the earth The Mayan sacrifice Devout followers praying for the rain Offering a beating heart Ready to be slain We march as slow in line A processional of lies Convinced it will bring us A better life Climbing the steps to their death Silent they walk by Knowing there is nothing left Aware that they will die Hoping this will bring an end To famine and to plight The steps run red with blood The Mayan sacrifice We march as slow in line A processional of lies Convinced it will bring us A better life We march as slow in time A processional of lies Convinced it will bring us A better life We march as slow in line A processional of lies Convinced it will bring us A better life We march as slow in time A processional of lies Convinced it will bring us A better life

The last leaf falls from the tree Such a beautiful sight to see All is quiet for a moment of peace Before the end is unleashed We have blackened the sky Everything dies As we stare at the sky Everything dies Once so easy taking a breath Becomes a blanket of death The temperature rises, the light it alludes We are fading into oblivion We have blackened the sky Everything dies As we stare at the sky Everything dies We’ll never live to see another day We’ve done this to ourselves We didn’t listen to what they had to say It never mattered anyway All is lost, all is gone There is nothing left A faded memory, of once we lived Never again to see Never again to see We have blackened the sky Everything dies As we stare at the sky Everything dies We have blackened the sky Everything dies As we stare at the sky Everything dies

about

After almost 3 years, Second Grave has finally delivered their first full length offering. Recorded at Mad Oak Studios in Allston, MA with Benny Grotto, and tracked in 4 days, the songs weave tales of the sea, struggles and sacrifices, horror, and death into a 56 minute journey. This self-released album culminates the best songwriting of the bands almost 5 year career incorporating the riff generating doom and soaring leads of Van Guilder and Drzal.
